I accepted the fabric just as the five o‘clock train chugged down the tracks past us. K-nook, k-nook, k-nook. Usually I waved at the engineer in the front car and counted the beds of logs passing by. But I was too busy thinking about what Momma might say. She might not be impressed by the plain ring, but Momma was sure to tell Leroy yes after she saw that pretty velvet.

That evening, I thought about Leroy’s proposal. That’s why I squeezed between the wall and our bed with the fabric in one hand and Momma’s scissors in the other. Then I cut the beautiful velvet into so many pieces it looked like a jigsaw puzzle.
